Last week, a state of the art CT Scanner was installed at the Weipa hospital as a result of partnership with Old Mapoon Aboriginal Corporation, Rio Tinto and the Torres and Cape Hospital and Health Service. This long term project finally came to fruition last week and will provide service to Weipa and the Cape Region meaning 40-50 patients a month from the region will no longer need to travel out of their region for clinical investigation. It will also provide jobs for locals in the region. OMAC Chair, Geraldine Mamoose said that “the long-term aim would be to have local Aboriginal people operating the equipment in the hospital”.
“The CT scanner is the first of it’s kind in Cape York [and] this is the first major contribution project from the corporation.”
This is a huge milestone for the Cape and we’re so thrilled to have contributed.
